Santa Ana, CA Bomba: Bomba Workshop for Adults - Saturday January 3rd and 4th, 2015



As culmination of a Puerto Rican Bomba apprenticeship sponsored by the Alliance for California Traditional Arts (ACTA), Hector Luis Rivera, Co-director of Atabey, will be teaching Bomba as taught by Roman Ito Carrillo, who learned and performed with Rafael Cepeda, one of the patriarchs of Bomba de Puerto Rico.

We will briefly discuss history of bomba and learn, practice and execute four of the rhythms and the different parts of bomba: cuas, maraca, buleo, canto, paseo, and piquetes.

We will have two bomba drums and two congas for playing buleo. Please bring jembe or conga if you have one. Also bring sticks (drum sticks) for playing cuas and a maraca if you have these instruments.

Women bring a reboso or scarf that isn't too heavy and seems fluid enough to use during a bomba dance. We will have possible one or two extra bomba skirts.

When: Saturday January 3rd and Sunday January 4th
Time: 2:30pm-5pm
Donation: Honor the exchange (partial proceeds go to space)
