Video of the Week (May 16, 2013) - Don Felix Alduen's "Oi Una Voz Y Me Le Da Memoria"

This week's video of the week is by Don Felix Alduen one of the greatest master's of Bomba.  Though Alduen was clearly of advance age in this video his band was still amazing and the energy in this video was fantastic. You can only wonder what he was like 20 or 30 years prior to this film.  Another real treat about this video is the dancing. My Bomba teachers have complained about the worrying trend of only women dancing Bomba, the music has always called for either or both sexes to dance.  In this video two brothers show you how its done.  Not alone that but they are clearly doing a call and response dance which is sadly fading away across the Black diaspora. For more of Don Felix Alduen's music buy his album "Candela" its a beautiful piece of work.  Enjoy the video.

Video of the Week - Ilu Aye's Mayaguez

This week I selected Ilu Aye's Mayaguez.  Back in early 2012 one of my drum instructors told my class that as a part of our Bomba education we really needed to see what it looks like outside of the class room.  In settings like the club featured in this video a dancer may not have the room to really spread out and do all their moves because things get so compact. The dancers in this video show that despite the close quarters you have to bring it. Another point the instructors were trying to make was that Bomba has a different energy to it outside of the class room and away from cultural demonstrations. In this video Bomberos are performing and dancing for each other everyone gets it and it makes difference when it comes to the vibe.

The wooden top barrile drum

Just the other day I got the chance to speak to  Angel of ARG Percussion about his drum making.   Angel's drums stood out in my mind because he makes a wooden top barrile.  Angel also makes wooden top versions of bongos and panderos.  Unfortunately, due to his day job he doesn't have time to build very many drums.  He informed me that if you are interested in having him build you a drum you must have a lot of patience.  Below are three videos from the ARG Percussion YouTube channel. If you are interested in having Angel make you a drum go to my drum maker page and give him a call.
