This workshop will cover a brief history of Puerto Rican Bomba, as well as the basics of:

- Internalizing rhythm in dance movements (paseo)
- Form and figure
- Understanding the concepts of rhythm & improvisational language
- Differences in Bomba rhythms

Hijos de Agüeybaná brings together exponents of "toque", dance, and song of Puerto Rican bomba. More than a group, they are considered a family committed to their Afro-Caribbean culture, whose mission is to share the legacy of the African roots in and out of their Island.  Hijos de Agueybana will be performing at the First Annual Afro Latino Festival of New York Saturday, June 29, 2013 at Parkside Ave., Brooklyn. The festival is from 12 - 6pm - No Cover Charge.

The group has another performance at Camaradas El Barrio Saturday 9pm with a $8 cover charge.

Puerto Ricans are the second biggest Latino community in Chicago (more than 113 000 according to the 2000 census). This community, whose presence in the Windy City dates back to the 1940s, is celebrating the annual Puerto Rican Day Parade and Festival this weekend. This event takes place along Paseo Boricua on Division Street (between California and Western Ave) in Humboldt Park, a neighborhood considered as the heart of all things Puerto Rican in Chicago. The festival honors the nearly 4 million inhabitants of Puerto Rico and all people of Puerto Rican birth or heritage residing in the mainland U.S. This celebration has become the largest attended Latino festival in the city of Chicago and in the Midwest. It features four days of fun, food, and festivities.
Also, tomorrow Saturday June 15, the fest will be the epicenter of the Puerto Rican People’s Parade, which starts at noon at Division and Western Avenue. if you go to he People’s parade tomorrow, stop by Africaribe Open House between 11am and 3pm on Paseo Boricua. ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Julia L. Gutiérrez-Rivera was weaned as a child on Bomba/Plena, receiving formal training as a part of LP21‟s Children's Workshops' Pioneer Class. She is now recognized as one of NYC's premier Bomba & Plena dancers.
Throughout her childhood, Julia has been taught by many of NY's Bomba &Plena luminaries, including founding LP21 members. Over the years, she continued to develop her art, integrating diverse regional & generational influences in her dance as a performer and teaching artist with Los Pleneros de la 21, Alma Moyo, Bámbula and The Legacy Women. Julia’s dance classes are highly regarded, as she guides participants at all stages of their development through comprehensive and fun exercises to strengthen each dancer’s own voice within the music. She has offered classes and performed for thousands people of all ages and backgrounds throughout the world.

UN PASO ALANTE series is an extension of the Bomba & Plena Community Workshops, and offers advanced level or master class explorations and different iterations of the drumming, dancing, singing and musical practice of Afro-Puerto Rican traditions and other expressions of the Afro-Caribbean. It is made possible in part by support from the New York State Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs and the offices of NYC Council Member Melissa Mark Viverito, District 8.

This is the first video from LP21 on VOW, its special simply because of the primo player, that would be the late Maestro Tito Cepeda who mentored many members of the current New York City Bomba y Plena community.  Memories of his mentoring are still fresh in the minds of his students who now mentor me, I've heard lots of good stories of Maestro Cepeda demanding that his students breath.
