Virginia Bomba: Afro-Puerto Rican Dance Workshop - Saturday June 21, 2014

We are going to Richmond! Join us to understand the history, learn the dance and feel the culture!

We extend you an invitation to learn about the Afro-Caribbean music and dance from Puerto Rico called BOMBA. It is a music and dance that dates back to the 1700s, developed by the African slaves that worked in the sugarcane fields, and it is still alive in the island and in the diaspora. It is a dialog between the dancer and one of the many drummers. The dancer makes body figures called 'piquetes' and the lead drummer --called the 'primo' or 'subidor'-- interprets them in the drum. One dancer at a time 'challenges' or 'talks' to the 'primo' drummer through his or her dance sequence. Bomba is a personal expression, it is freedom, it is our legacy and our treasure.

The workshop will cover bomba history, basic steps for multiple bomba rhythms, a dance sequence, and indivudual practice in a bombazo. If you are interested in this opportunity we encourage you to come out and have fun with us. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own long full-circle skirts or scarves. New York Bomba and Plena: Caja Dura RumBomPlenazo Social Networking Jam Session - Friday May 23, 2014

Greetings, Productivity, and Clarity for all. This is Nicky Laboy inviting everyone who is a dancer, singer, drummer, and a lover of music, dance, and culture, to a night of socializing, jamming, laughing, learning, embracing, networking, and celebration of Life.
A brief intro to Caja Dura :
This group started in the perfect setting and home to me, Camaradas El Barrio. Along side Dj RonZilla with the party Beats & Eats, I was invited by the owner Orlando Plaza to bring another drummer to play along side some good vibes, great food, and a gentleman rolling cigars. I made a few calls, invited a few guests to an open rumba jam only using cajon drums. This group was to preserve the rich Afro-Cuban culture of rumba with the sounds of cajons. It makes a difference. It was named right outside of Camaradas and forever since, has been.
Now, I would like to take this group, and open it up to everyone that shows interest in the culture, love, and music of the Caribbean. Therefore, creating this party.
I've announced saying that this gathering is for the sole purpose of building those broken bridges, making new ones, embracing our elders who have passed through music, laughs, chants, and movements. as we all know, there are plenty of talented musicians, singers, dancers, etc etc., Can't we all just get along? JAJAJAJA
Kidding, No joda, come down, sing a song, dance a dance with someone, play some drums, have a good time. I will have my cajons there, PLENEROS, bring your panderos, Bomberos, bring a barrel, and RUMBEROS, bring your voices, and if you want to bring a conga, fine by me. If you play bass, or flute, bring it...
Special guests always stop by ;)
