About this event:
Join The Legendary Mic (performing Hip Hop), BombaYo (performing Bomba), and Legacy Women (performing Palos) as we celebrate the culmination of 2 years of fundraising to achieve a very special CULTURAL EXCHANGE TRIP to Dominican Republic!

In Mid-August, 8 of The Legacy Women will be traveling to D.R. to study the inner roots of music and dances from the Palos , Sarandunga, Gaga, Salve, and Congos traditions!

All funds raised will be used to financially compensate our teachers, folks who've dedicated their lives to learning, performing, and teaching our African-derived roots traditions. We are blessed to study with them, please help us support them in turn for keeping the ember of our culture glowing bright! Please help us raise the $1000 to make this a reality! No contribution is too small and we accept donations on-line via paypal to the following email: manuela@thelegacycircle.org.

The evening will feature a raffle and a chance to win a BARRIL de BOMBA for only $5, an open mic for musicians and poets, and other cool prizes!

Video of the Week: Cuembe na ma..

The dancing in this video is excellent and so is the drumming (everyone is on point).  Those that know their barriles know Ricky Soler as a master barrile drum maker.  What some don't realize is that Ricky is also a great singer and band leader.  Here's his band RumbaCuembe singing the classic Bomba  song "Cuembe na ma"... enjoy.

Fundraiser for Bomba practice rhythm CD - Friday August 2, 2013

This is a fundraiser to help Jorge Vazquez and his much anticipated Bomba rhythm practice cd "Cuando La Boma Te Llama".  George has a reputation for one of the cleanest sounds in Bomba and he is entrusted by Los Pleneros de la 21 to run their famous Bomba and Plena children workshop.   This cd will be a must have when its released, but first we must help George get to the finish line.  If you are in NYC and you love Bomba try to attend this important event.

Date: August 2, 2013
Time: 9pm
Performers: Alma Moyo and Legacy Women - (a possible performance by Los Cimarrones de la Bomba).
Admission: $10
Venue: Camaradas El Barrio (www.camaradaselbarrio.com)
Location: 2241 First Avenue & 115 Street 10029
Telephone: (212) 348-2703

Purpose of the event:

"This fundraiser is to cover the cost of CD duplication.

CD description (English and Spanish):"Cuando La Bomba Te Llama" is a unique educational CD that provides practice tracks for seasoned as well as beginner bomba dancers and musicians. The first 5 tracks are 5 full minutes of 5 basic bomba rhythms: sicá, cuembé, holandé, yubá and seis corrido. Those tracks provide great practice opportunity for dancers, singers, composers and primo/subidor players. The next 15 tracks feature what CD producer/percussionist Jorge Vázquez calls the "bomba minus 1" method, where the buleador, cuá or maraca is absent so that people can practice one of those instruments while having the support of the rest of the bomba ensemble. This CD is a much-needed contribution toward strengthening bomba and nurturing the next generation of bomberos and bomberas.

- Raquel Z. Rivera
