Bronx Bomba: The Annual People's Poetry In The Park / Bomba Fest & BBQ w/ Friends & Family

The Annual People's Poetry In The Park / Bomba Fest & BBQ w/ Friends & Family

Hola, mi gente!

It's that time again! Every year I host a picnic for our friends and family and just like last year, we feature LIVE ENTERTAINMENT.... Bomba y Plena drums and dance will fill the air, an Open Mic around 2 PM hosted by Nuyorican/ Capicu poet PaPo Swiggity, live painting by some of the best artists in the city and we're always surprised by what our people in the crowd offer! If you were one of the OVER 100 people that attended last year's picnic, then you KNOW it's an event you shouldn't miss...
OFF THE HOOK! Prepare to bring some food for the grill and beverages, soon we will post a list of our needs :)

* * IN ADDITION... We are celebrating a few birthdays! We will celebrate the beginning of a new year for Grito De Poetas poet Rob Vassilarakis, visual artist Mia Roman and Mimi Rivera. * *

For those of you who are not familiar with this event, please allow me to explain. During the summer many of us gather for different events, may it be poetry, party cruises, concerts, birthday parties, etc. Unfortunately for some, many of these events take place at clubs or lounges.

I've come to understand there are many people who miss out on these gatherings for the following reasons: Employment, Under 21, Unable to find a babysitter, and for many of us, our financial situation isn't so great.

My main objective: I always do this picnic on the last Saturday before classes officially resume as an End of Summer Break gathering. I do it this way to provide a neutral ground for EVERYONE to attend and enjoy. This is an awesome icebreaker as well. There is no need to "dress to impress", no pressure of "one on one' meetings, but most importantly, it's a FAMILY event. No one needs to be left behind.

This is an awesome way to meet the people you've established relationships with over time over the line but have never had the chance to meet. This is also a great way of meeting new people and creating new relationships.

It's always wonderful to share laughs, stories and great food, play games, dance, and create new stories for new memories. However, you still miss out on some of these awesome events and that's why I thought to do it different this year.

I've reached out to some of my wonderful people and they've agreed to contribute to this picnic and turn it into an extraordinary event.

Take 6 train to Pelham Bay Park then transfer to the BX-12 Orchard Beach

Location Arroyo, PR
Contact: (787) 902-3520

Research, Research and more Research

This year's conference is completely focused on sharing research and equipping attendees with the knowledge and skills necessary to understand best practices for conducting their own research. They will also once again be able to be part of Bomba history. In 2011, which was the first time the BRC was held in Puerto Rico, we visited two historical sites in Bomba history and held Bailes de Bomba in those sites with the participation and support of family members of historic Bomba families. This year, we are working to bring you the same opportunity to be part of Bomba history. More details to come...

If you are interested in volunteering for the 5BRC, please let us know or communicate with us at 787-902-3520.

The 5BRC will take place in Puerto Rico over Labor Day weekend which this year begins on Friday, August 30, 2013.

Afro-Puerto Rican Bomba Educational CD by Jorge Vazquez

After a fundraiser event on August 2nd, all that is needed to complete this project is $600With your help the CDs will be ready in early September!

"Cuando La Bomba Te Llama: vol. 1"—a unique educational CD that provides practice tracks for seasoned as well as beginner bomba dancers and musicians. The first 5 tracks are 5 full minutes of 5 basic Afro-Puerto Rican bomba rhythms: sicá, cuembé, holandé, yubá and seis corrido. Those tracks provide great practice opportunity for dancers, singers, composers and primo/subidor players. The next 15 tracks feature what I call the "bomba minus 1" method, where the buleador, cuá or maraca is absent so that people can practice one of those instruments while having the support of the rest of the bomba ensemble. This CD is my contribution toward strengthening bomba and nurturing the next generation of bomberos and bomberas.

Irresistible Bomba - a review of Higos De Agueybana's new CD "Agua del Sol" by Angel Romero

This review was originally published in World Music Central.org on August 13, 2013 by Angel Romero. The original link is available at the end of this post.

Hijos de Agüeybaná
Agua del Sol (Tumi Music, 2012)
Bomba, a lively Afro-Puerto Rican musical genre is the focus of the album Agua del Sol by Hijos de Agüeybaná. The outstanding group presents a wide range of bomba forms, from the very traditional to salsa, jazz and electronic explorations. The album opens with ambient an electronic music and drums piece tiled Saludo al sol (greeting to the sun). From there, Hijos de Agüeybaná quickly shift to acoustic bomba, using barrel drums and the characteristic call and response vocals.
Although salsa contains a high percentage of Afro-Cuban rhythms, Hijos de Agüeybaná demonstrate how bomba was also incorporated into salsa. The title cut ‘Agua del sol’ shows us this exciting form of modern bomba by adding piano and brass. The last piece on the album showcases a great jazz arrangement of ‘Te Invito.’
Drummer, multi-instrumentalist, and researcher Ángel Luis Reyes grew up in New York City and discovered bomba at a photo shoot as a young man. “I thought it was African music. I was stunned to hear it was from my island, from my home,” he recollects. Ángel Luis returned to Puerto Rico and interviewed a lot of elder musicians and dancers to learn more about bomba. “Ask any elder and they will tell you: Bomba is respect. You have to have respect throughout, for the drums, for your partners,” Ángel Luis explains.
What’s really exciting about Hijos de Agüeybaná is that most of the songs are original compositions by Otoqui Reyes Pizarro. This means that fresh new songs are being added to the bomba music pool.
“Bomba is your heart expressing itself freely,” adds Ángel Luis. “It’s the letting go. Letting it flow freely and reach out to the world.”
Agua del Sol is an impressive album, full of irresistible rhythms that celebrate the African roots of bomba.
