Queens NYC Bomba: Alma Moyo at Terraza 7 - Saturday December 20, 2014

Founded by Alex LaSalle from Moca, Puerto Rico, Alma Moyo is an intergenerational crew of Puerto Ricans and Dominicans who promote the diverse regional drum and vocal styles of Bomba with a Caribbean-blues sentiment. Illegal throughout parts of Puerto Rico as recently as the 1940's, Alma Moyo's Bomba is laden with revolutionary defiance, sorrowful lament, and invigorating sound.

The group has been performing its rich vocals and dynamic dance in theaters, concert halls, universities, and nightclubs throughout New York. Their debut album, No Hay Sabado Sin Sol, (There is No Saturday Without A Sunrise) is at once a harmonious ode to ancestral spirits, a call to unmask the exploiters in defense of the weak, and a recollection of bittersweet life experiences encountered in love, work, and community.

***ABOUT Celebrating el Festival del Hatillo (Puerto Rico), Wanaragua (Garifuna) and Jonkunnu (Jamaica)***

The Christmas season is a very festive time for Puerto Ricans, on the mainland and the island. During this time groups of strolling musicians go from house to house on parrandas in what is considered the Puerto Rican version of Christmas caroling. During the parranda there is an exchange of music and poetry for food and gifts.

Garifuna paranda is both a rhythm and a musical genre. Paranda itself became a genre in the 19th century soon after the Garifuna arrived in Honduras and were introduced to Spanish styles of music, which incorporated the acoustic guitar.

Jonkonnu is a masked celebration performed around Christmas time throughout the Caribbean, in places like Jamaica. The Garifuna version of it is called Wanaragua. In Puerto Rico, in Hatillo, the Día de los Inocentes is celebrated with el Festival de la Máscaras on December 29th. All these holidays share some common masquerades and customs, and we’ll take a look at all of them from a musical perspective.
