California

Berkeley Bomba and Plena classes:

Puerto Rican Percussion Workshop (Bomba and Plena will be covered along with other Puerto Rican percussion styles.)

La Peña Cultural Center on Wednesdays starting September 18, 2013. Level I, 7:00 pm to 8:15 pm; Level II, from 8:30 to 9:45 pm

*Location: La Pena Cultural Center, 3105 Shattuck Avenue, Berkeley, CA*
This 16-week workshop provides a foundation for percussion students and professionals interested in the musical traditions of Puerto Rico. Sessions will focus on the role of the percussion section in a variety of genres and subgenres of Puerto Rican music including Plena, Música Jíbara (mainly seis, aguinaldo, llanera and guaracha jíbara), and several major styles of Bomba (siká, kuembé, yubá, holandés and seis corrido). The last two weeks of the series explore how these song forms and their rhythmic vocabularies have been adapted to Salsa and Latin Jazz pieces/arrangements. The workshop seeks to develop and strengthen practical and conceptual skills in all of these genres and their stylistic variations. Participants will learn proper technique to play a variety of percussion instruments: panderos or panderetas de plena, the güícharo (Puerto Rican güiro used in plena and música jíbara), barriles or bombas (bomba drums), cuás, maraca de bomba, and the bongó as used in música jíbara. We will also consider examples of how congas, timbales and the drum set have been adapted to play these rhythms. This workshop also offers a general introduction to the history and socio-cultural context within which these musical traditions developed.

The workshop has two levels:
Level I is for beginning percussion students; Level II is appropriate for students with a good foundation in Puerto Rican music and/or intermediate-to-advanced level skills in percussion. We will meet at La Peña Cultural Center on Wednesdays starting September 18, 2013. Level I, 7:00 pm to 8:15 pm;

 Level II, from 8:30 to 9:45 pm; BUT first session will be from 7 to 8:30 pm for all, after that we will divide the groups. The cost of the entire series is $240 ($15 per session) or $18 drop in.

For more information or enrollment contact the instructor  Hector Lugo at hectorlugo65@gmail.com or 510-927-7984.

The Puerto Rican Percussion Workshop is another project of The Bomba y Plena Workshop; check out our other classes (Adult Bomba, Youth Bomba y Plena Workshop, Puerto Rican Music Ensemble) and please, help us spread the word. Thanks!!

Class Overview and Descriptions:

Puerto Rican Bomba, as we know it today, was born on the sugar cane plantations of the Island. It’s the popular response formed in music and dance to the aristocracy. Through the rhythms, happiness, faith, suffering, and daily events were communicated through the Tradition. The Tradition was born on the coasts of Puerto Rico and, on the coasts, is where it’s said to sound best. The barriles (Bomba drums) or las Bombas is where the name for Bomba came from. “In Bomba, there are three or more buleadores (rhythm drums/drummers) and only one primo or subidor (lead drummer),” as told by Rafael Cepeda Atiles, El Patriarca de la Bomba (known as the Patriarch of Bomba).

Beginner Class:
At each class, participants will have the opportunity to learn the three basic rhythms of Bomba – Yubá, Sicá, and Holandés - along with the variations within these rhythms.

Participants will be able to:
- identify the various instruments used in Bomba;
- understand the language of the Bomba drum;
- do the paseo or walk through the Batey (Bomba dance platform);
- gain an understanding of the dynamic between the dancer and the lead drummer; and
- understand the timing to use as a Bomba dancer.
*As students progress in their understanding of the three basic rhythms, additional Bomba rhythms will be taught.

Intermediate Class: This class will be tailored to each dancer’s needs in order to take them to the next level of skill and style as a Bomba dancer in the Santurce style of Bomba. There will be a focus on Paseo, Postura, interpretation of piquetes and much more. This class will also involve some lectures and group discussion regarding the history and other key elements of Bomba.

Connecticut ("CT")
Try contacting Flechas CT at FlechasCT.org, they hold the annual Fiestas de Loiza in CT every year and list a dance troupe called Folkolic Bohio Dance Troupe.  Their website mentions that they hold workshops it doesn't say if the are Bomba and Plena workshops. Contact this org at (203) 589-5423 an see if they can tell you about Bomba and Plena classes in CT.

Another idea is to contact a drum maker named Carlos Cruz listed, he's listed on the drum maker page and he lives in CT he may know the right people or may he may even give private lessons himself.

Yoruba 2 and Lydia Perez of Rhode Island do conduct workshops in CT, but these are mostly held in the public school system.

Another option is to drive or take a train into NYC its a short drive to Manhattan from southwest CT and Metro North has a station right at the northern tip of Spanish Harlem on 125 Street in Manhattan.  I think CT Bomberos have plenty of options for instruction if they are willing to come into NYC.

There are Bomba and Plena groups in Florida.  If you want to share info on classes being held in Florida email me at eastriverbomba@gmail.com.

Syracuse Bomba classes

La Casita Cultural Center

La Casita's Bomba y Plena classes meet on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays from 3 to 5 p.m. The workshops are intergenerational, bringing together children, youth, and adults, even from the same family. New classes begin in January 2013 and will continue through June 2013.

Throughout the workshops, participants learn about bomba and plena rhythms, through dance choreographies and instruments (bongos and pleneras). A major part of bomba and plena is improvisation. Participants are exposed to improvisation techniques and how to express themselves using lyrics, rhythms, and dance. Dancers discover the place bomba and plena has in the Puerto Rican culture. The workshops are led by a community of accomplished teacher-performers, including Luz Encarnacion. Guest dancers from the Syracuse Puerto Rican community also join the class.
