San Franciso Bomba: Puerto Rican Bomba & Plena Workshop w/ Hector Lugo - Saturday August 9, 2014

This hands-on workshop focuses on four of the most popular seises de bomba (bomba sub-genres) from the Santurce tradition of Puerto Rico — the sicá, the yubá, the cuembé and the holandés — as well as the basic percussion rhythms of the Puerto Rican plena. Participants will learn the techniques of playing traditional instruments, including the barriles (barrel drums), cuás (sticks) and maraca (shaker), as well as the panderos (hand-held frame drums) and güícharo (the Puerto Rican güiro or scraper) essential to plena. Participants will also learn songs for each of these rhythms, gaining an overview of the origins, evolution, and significance of plena and bomba in Puerto Rico’s rich musical culture. The workshop will be led by Héctor Lugo, director of La Mixta Criolla and The Bomba y Plena Workshop, with the assistance of Juseff Pili Martínez and Sandra García-Rivera.

Students are encouraged to bring their own drums to class; some instruments will be provided.
