Virginia Plena: Plena Libre @ Artisphere - Friday April 24, 2015

Led by founder and bassist Gary Nuñez, Plena Libre is recognized for taking the once dormant, Puerto Rican plena style of music and reclaiming it for a new generation of listeners to enjoy. The group became instantly popular in Puerto Rico, with National Geographic crediting Plena Libre among other Puerto Rican acts in “spearheading the Latin invasion of American popular music.”Unlike salsa orchestras, Plena Libre features three vocalists singing in captivating three and four-part harmonies which complement the group’s danceable, Afro-Rican compositions. The group’s use of call-and-response, percussion and polyrhythms keeps each show feeling groovy and fresh.

Plena Libre has been nominated for several Grammy and Latin Grammys and has recorded with notable musicians like pianist Eddie Palmieri, Papo Lucca and Nestor Torres.

Virginia Bomba: Bomba Afro-Puerto Rican Dance Workshop - Saturday November 15, 2014

We are returning to Richmond! 

We extend you an invitation to learn about the Afro-Caribbean music and dance from Puerto Rico called BOMBA. It is a music and dance developed by the African slaves that worked in the sugarcane fields, and it is still alive in the island and in the diaspora. It is a dialog between the dancer and one of the many drummers. The dancer makes body figures called 'piquetes' and the lead drummer --called the 'primo' or 'subidor'-- interprets them in the drum. One dancer at a time 'challenges' or 'talks' to the 'primo' drummer through his or her dance sequence. Bomba is a personal expression, it is freedom, it is our legacy and our treasure.

The workshop will cover bomba history, basic steps, a dance sequence, and an individual practice. If you are interested in this opportunity we encourage you to come out and have fun with us!

Female attendees are encouraged to bring their own long full-circle skirts or scarves.

The workshop will cover percussion, basic steps, a dance routine for boys and girls and an individual practice. We encourage you to bring your child to learn and experience Puerto RIcan culture while having fun. Children between 4 and 11 years old are welcome to attend.

Los invito a el primer bombazo en el area de Fredericksburg! 

Un bombazo es una fiesta donde se toca, canta y baila bomba puertorriqueña entre la familia, comunidad y amigos. En un bombazo todos tienen la oportunidad de bailar al ritmo de los barriles de bomba y dialogar con ellos mediante sus movimientos o “piquetes”. También pueden aprovechar y tocar barriles, hacer coros y hasta cantar. Todos hacen un acto de union mediante la música y el baile.

Traigan sus faldas, barriles, voces, o solo su presencia para pasar un rato chevere y practicar lo aprendido en los talleres. Como las veces anteriores, se hará tipo 'potluck', así que pongan en los commentarios lo que van a traer.
Sientanse en la libertad de invitar a amigos o familiares. Esto es un evento para toda la familia!

*Se aceptarán donaciónes de $5 por adulto*
*Voluntarios que quieran ayudar a montar mesas/sillas, lleguen a las 6pm.*
