Chicago Bomba and Plena: Fiestas de la Calle 2014 - Saturday December 6, 2014

Las Fiestas de la Calle are SRBCC's version of the world famous San Sebastián Street Festival, celebrated every year in San Juan. Join us for live salsa with Papo Santiago, bomba and plena by Buya (CTA viral video sensation), DJs, traditional Puerto Rican food, "artesanos" and more.

Students from our mural program will showcase their work, including a set recreating the streets of Old San Juan. Browse and select records from the Agúzate collection at our “funky vellonera” (funky jukebox). Ticket includes food tastings and two drinks. All proceeds benefit Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center.

Chicago Bomba: Global Rhythm Wednesday (Buya's 5 Year Anniversary) - Wednesday November 26, 2014

Chicago, IL (November 26, 2014) Buya is pleased to announce its Fifth Anniversary Concert and live recording. The concert is Wednesday, November 26th at Mr. Brown’s Lounge and will feature Buya’s dynamic and soulful rendering of Afro-Puerto Rican Bomba. 

After five years of performing together, Buya is excited to record its first live album. Developed during the 17th century among African descendants in Puerto Rico, Bomba is the island’s oldest surviving music and dance form. The Fifth Anniversary Concert will capture Buya’s innovative yet traditional approach to Bomba. 

There is no cover for the concert, however attendance capacity is limited. Buya’s Fifth Anniversary Concert starts at 9pm at Mr. Brown’s Lounge located at 2301 W. Chicago Ave, Chicago IL 60622.

Buya is a Chicago-based ensemble which aims to preserve and advance Bomba, Puerto Rico's oldest surviving African-rooted tradition. Buya means ‘good spirit’ in Taino, the language spoken among Puerto Rico’s indigenous population, and the group strives to embody this idea while advancing the tradition through performances, workshops, and community engagement. This includes artistic dialogue with historians and performers from Puerto Rico, and collaborative work with various Chicago-based musicians and dancers from Belize (Laruni Hati), Haiti (Tamboula), and Mexico (JaroChicanos).

Chicago Bomba and Plena: Traveling Bomba y Plena Park District Summer Tour 2014

I am excited to announce that the city has approved my proposal to bring Bomba y Plena throughout the city of Chicago!  Las BomPleneras and Bomba Con Buya will be the featured groups to bring you live Afro Puerto Rican music from June to August! Dates and times are confirmed and we would love to see everyone come out and support! This is the second year that the city allows us to expose our culture in such a cool way! All Park district events are family friendly! 

This is chance to explore, learn and educate about your own culture and help teach others about it at the same time. Each event will be 2 hours with 45 minutes of dance lesson and 1hr 15mn of live music BOMBAZO STYLE ! We are excited and ready to enjoy this summer to the fullest!!!

Chicago Bomba - A Bombear se ha dicho! BOMBA CLASS! - Starting Wednesday February 5, 2014

Come and join in a 6 week course of Bomba dancing!!! I am excited to teach a semester of classes open to both Women and Men! and Children 10 and up! I will be offering Beginners and Intermediate class. 

Beginners Bomba will be focusing on Sica, Yuba and Cuembe! Style, timing,variations and history

Intermediate Bomba will be focusing on Holande and Seis while also reviewing Sica, Yuba and Cuembe! Beginner Solos! Style, timing & variations

Every class will end with a ten minute bombazo style to close each class! Classes are fun! You will learn songs aside from dancing as well.

Class Schedule:

Every Wednesday starting :Beginners will be from 6-7pm
Intermediate will be from 7-8pm

Feb 5th, 12th,19th, 26th, March 5th & 12th!
