NY Bomba: Legacy Women at Multicultural Event to Benefit WBAI - Saturday February 15, 2014



Come to Big Road in Chelsea at 7 PM on Saturday, February 15th, 2014, for a multicultural event that will benefit WBAI, 99.5 FM, free-speech, listener-sponsored community radio in NY. The program will preview the 2014 edition of the New York African Chorus Ensemble's"Celebrate Diversity, Celebrate You" Festival. There will be three great musical acts, dancers, poetry and a short film, including:

--the NY African Chorus Ensemble - an award winning group of virtuoso vocalists, musicians and dancers directed by the NYACE founder, ethnomusicologist Joyce Adewumi (lead singer in the video below), showcasing a wide range of African vocal music in choral settings.

--Niall O'Leary's Percussive Irish Music and Dance Ensemble, led by World Champion step dancer, multi-instrumentalist and cultural educator Niall O'Leary.

--Legacy Women - an all-women group of dynamic singers, precision drummers and expressive dancers performing the music of the Afro-Latin Caribbean and highlighting the role of women in preserving and transmitting culture. They will also be showing and discussing the film, "Birthright Crisis 2012," concerning the ongoing crisis faced by people of Haitian ancestry in the Dominican Republic, including many who were born there, but are being stripped of their Dominican citizenship and deported to Haiti (a neighboring land where most have never been).

We had a great time at the wolf moon party, and things are just getting better! We are bringing back the incredible all-womens Puerto Rican drumming and singing group LAS BOMBERAS DE LA BAHIA.

DC/Maryland/Virginia Bomba: Bomba in the DMV! 2 workshops with Julia Gutierrez-Rivera from NYC! - Sunday February 16, 2014



BOMBA! workshops coming to the DMV areas on Sunday, February 16, 2014!

Bomba is one of the traditional musical styles of Puerto Rico. It is the mixture of the three different cultures of the Island, the Spanish, African and Taino cultures. The base rhythm is played by two or more drums. Its real meaning is about the encounter and creative relationship between dancers, percussionists, and singers. Instructor Julia Gutierrez-Rivera from NY! will be teaching a 2 hour workshop at Dance Studio Lioudmila accompanied by Cultura Plenera from MD! for all level dancers.

Description of workshops:

Workshop I: Introduction to Bomba dance: 
6:30pm to 8:00pm

Appropriate for all levels, focusing mainly on rudiments of the dance practice and expressions of Bomba. The session will introduce the core structure of Bomba dance, rhythm and time metrics. Concepts including: paso.basico, paseo, postura, and figuereo will be the core foci of the session. The purpose is to introduce these concepts as the fundamental elements of Bomba for first time dancers, it can also fine tune these techniques for more experienced dancers. The session will segue into workshop 2 with basic piquetes (the improvised movements that characterize Bomba dance).

NY Bomba: Bomba and Rumba Super Sunday - Sunday February 9, 2014



Global Rhythms presents Super Sunday: Back to back Rumba and Bomba Dance Class !!!

Back by popular demand, Global Rhythms offers a crash course rumba workshop reviewing the techniques and concepts from RumbAcademy I. This is a great opportunity for beginner students who want to learn dance fundamentals in time for the remaining weeks of RumbAcademy.www.globalrhythmsashe.com.



The Rumba workshop will be followed by an Afro-Puerto Rican Bomba dance workshop led dancer and cultural worker Cynthia Renta. During this workshop, students will learn Bomba dance in an interactive, energetic and supportive dance environment. Special focus will be given to building improvisational solo dance techniques. Our desire is to continue building important cultural, artistic ties between Puerto Rican and Cuban art communities often referred to as the “dos alas” or (two wings of the same bird). We will look specifically at the importance of Rumba (Cuba) and Bomba (Puerto Rico) respectively as community participatory art forms.www.facebook.com/cynthiarenta



The Rumba and Bomba workshop will be followed by a group class trip to the Los Gallos Rumba in Harlem. Students will have the opportunity to execute their new dance steps in am open rumba event amongst the wider dance and artist community.
